Today in class we discussed women in the workplace. I agree with what was said in class reguarding womens job choices are seen as helping people so that is all the reward one should need. Womens jobs that "help" people and the ones with lower paying professions. I think that because they are helping peole that they should recieve higher salaries.
Another thing that was discussed was women not asking for higher salaries or raises. I think that this is an issue, however we have socialized women not to be assertive and ask for what they want. Women are supposed to be passive, and asking for more money is not very passive. So, should women be active and ask for more money; which goes against what they have been taught their whole lives; or should they be passive and society as a whole work together to get women better salaries?

I would have to say I agree whether it's a woman or a man in a "helping position" I feel that they are under appreciated and under paid. I find it funny how only unless your the owner of a company, actor, or sports star you won't get the big bucks. It's sad to think that with the economy this way that the jobs that keep or country going or the ones that are under paid and the jobs held by so few are in my opinion grossly over paid. I mean did David Beckham really need to 90 million dollars to come play for the galaxy?
When a woman ask for a higher salary, people think that she is a bitch who care all about money.
And also in "helping" professions, I feel like society think that 'if you are in profession which "helping people," then why you care about your money? You should be in that position not because of money but because of the feeling that you wanna "help" people.' Of course I don't agree with it, but I feel like society has some sort of that kind of idea.
I dont think women should receive higher pay just because they are helping people, but should because they have a job that dictates the type of pay they should receive. You cant expect a a nurse to get paid more than an engineer. The work is different and requires different knowledge of whats going on. I feel if women want higher pay they should go to school for those professions that pay higher. Once in those positions women should speak up and not be so passive. society is not going to get you a higher salary, you have to make your voice heard. There is the EEOC,FMLA, and affirmative action, they are doing their part, its time for women to do theirs.
I agree that women should get higher pay for these helping jobs. I think that it is funny how without these jobs half the people would not be where they are at now. Especially when it comes to teachers. Without these teachers most of the individuals that are making a lot money would not be where they are noe. What if we took away eduacation and teachers? I bet society would realize what an important role they are and would pay more. This doesn't just apply to teachers. It can be a number of jobs.
I think jobs should be paid the same regardless of which sex is doing it. Males and females should be paid the same to do the same work.
I also think that women should speak up about getting raises. If you never ask, you'll never receive.
I also think that a lot of helping jobs (i.e. teachers and nurses) should be paid more. If not for many of these positions, many of us would be uneducated and sick. We do however have to think about where those salaries come from. If we want teachers to be paid more, that means we have to raise taxes and if we want nurses to be paid more, that means our medical bills would be more. The question is, which is more important? Americans are selfish and so long as they continue to be these jobs will continue to be underpaid.
