9/17

Today in class we discussed how society makes things popular. This is true, even if it degrades women, as long as it sounds or looks cool then society is, for the most part ok with it. The issue of Hooters and if there were a male version if it would work. I do not think a male version of Hooters would work because for one it is socially accecptable for women to go to Hooters to eat. I do not think that men would be comfortable eating a restaurant where men are walking around with tight shirts on with a speedo, or shirtless. Society says what is ok for men and women, and men attending a male version of Hooters would not be ok. To me there is nothing wrong with Hooters, I have eaten there multiple times. However, I think it would be completely different if it was an all male restaurant.

You can never please a woman. There is one perspective that states women are victims of the industry because they are always being degraded in rap songs, yet they are not being forced to be in these videos. Then we have people complain about women wearing these skimpy outfits and the restaurant is being blamed for this problem. Yea it is their uniform policy but just as the girl in the videos, these ladies are not forced to wear those outfits. I think we need to focus on the women themselves and understand why they do the things they do and not why are they always being exploited. Society does have a significant influence and has allowed this company to expand and "degrade" more women. As far as a male version of it, well.......i hope that never happens. But we do have male strip clubs that no one ever seems to tal about...I wonder why?

John Doe, I would like to dispute your first sentence- You CAN please a woman, but you cannot please WOMEN. Personally, I'm not a fan of Hooters or the stereotype that goes along with it, but in an industry where sex appeal sells, it is to be expected. No, there may not be a chain restaurant aimed at women, but I assure you, we watch and appreciate the view any time we go out to a bar that hires good looking bartenders or a restaurant where "dreamy" men serve wine and dessert with a sparkle in their eye and a good helping of flirtation... We go about it a different way, but our motives are the same.
